Classes are sponsored by the Minnesota State Horticultural Society, but are held at various locations, as noted. Enrollment is limited, and pre-registration is required. To register, call 651-643-3601 or 800-676-6747, ext 211.

Refunds will not be issued for nonattendance except by cancellation at least one week prior to class. MSHS requires a five-student minimum to hold a class. If a class is going to be cancelled, you will be notified three days prior to the class’s start date. Also, you will get a refund of the fee if MSHS cancels the class.

Plant ID level 2: Ten More Flowering Plant Families

$40 MSHS and Arboretum member, $50 nonmembers

 

Tuesdays, July 14 & 21 (two sessions), 6 to 8 p.m.

Location: Bachman’s Heritage Room, 6010 Lyndale Ave. S., Minneapolis.
Gain the knowledge to recognize and understand characteristics for identification of 10 more plant families. This continues from Plant ID level 1. You may attend level 2 even if didn’t attend level 1.

Instructors: Beth Jarvis is a horticulturist. Shirley Mah Kooyman is a botanist with a specialty in taxonomy and the Arboretum’s Plant Specialist.

Landscape Design Basics for Homeowners

Monday, July 20, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Got a landscape design project, but don't know where to start? This class will give you the basics. During this 8-hour class, students use a fictitious site to learn about site analysis, the design process, and plant selection with hands-on labs throughout the day. Price includes the Plant Elements of Design /plant selection software, plus basic drawing tools and all supplies.

Instructors: Julie Weisenhorn, Extension Educator and Director, U of MN Master Gardener Program, and Dr. Jim Calkins, Education Specialist, Horticultural Science at the University of Minnesota
Make your own Trough Garden Container

$45 members, $55 nonmembers

 

Tuesday, July 21, 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Location: Roseville Central Park Muriel Sahlin Arboretum, 2525 North Dale Street, Roseville.

Create your own trough planter in the style of old stone sinks and animal troughs that have been used to grow plants for centuries. Made with Styrofoam, it’s lighter than concrete and undamaged by freezing! Bring gloves, trowel and a friend. Workshop fee includes all supplies and a few plants for your container. Co-sponsored by the City of Roseville and the Minnesota State Horticultural Society.

Instructor: Shirley Friberg, a member of the Rock Garden Club of Minnesota.
Make a Trough Garden Container

$45 MSHS members, $55 nonmembers

 

Tuesday, July 21, 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Location: Harriet Alexander Nature Center, 2520 North Dale St., Roseville.
Made with Styrofoam, these troughs are lighter than concrete and undamaged by freezing. While the trough can be planted with any small annual or perennial, we will show you how to grow alpine plants in a trough. Bring gloves, a wire brush and hot air gun if you have them. Dress for mess. Class will be held in a classroom. Workshop fee includes all supplies and a plant for your container. Limited to 20.

Instructor: Shirley Friberg has been an active member of the Rock Garden of Minnesota for many years, and has made a variety of troughs.

Create a Cast Bird Bath

$37 for members, $47 for nonmembers

 

Tuesday, July 28, 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Location: Muriel Sahlin Arboretum, Roseville Central Park, 2525 North Dale St., Roseville.
Create a beautiful and functional cast bird bath out of cement using a rhubarb, hosta or burdock leaf. All materials included, but be sure to "dress for mess." You will need to pick up your birdbath after it has dried on Friday July 31 between the hours of 1 and 4 p.m. It will be ready for you to paint when you get it home. You can purchase a rustic stand for your birdbath, and pick it up on Friday. Cost for the stand is $25, and must be paid for at Tuesday’s class. Limited to 20 students.

Instructors: Sally Lehn and Charlie Johnson of "Garden Treasures." Together they have four years of experience teaching and creating all kinds of treasures for your garden.
